For twenty years, Cuisinart has been the bestselling ice cream maker brand, in both the canister-in-freezer and built-in compressor configurations. Models of the former type, which sell for as little as $35, require a pre-freeze set-up period of up to 24 hours per batch. You can buy multiple freezer canisters to make multiple batches if you have the freezer space, but you can’t skip the pre-freeze step. The compressor models, which start at about $160, are less limiting, and Cuisinart’s model Ice-50, selling for $299 has led the field in this countertop appliance category.
Cuisinart just released the Ice-100 for the same price as the Ice-50. It’s a sleeker, modernized version of the older model, and destined to be a bestseller. The new ICE-100 is a few inches smaller than the ICE-50, it has enhanced programmable settings, and it comes with two specialized mixing paddles, one designed for gelato.
